Reluctant accountant? ‘Our’ story?

    I’ve used this phrase to describe the period of my career when I was working in a way that didn’t suit me, didn’t play to my strengths, a time when I felt ‘we’ could do so much more the the business we worked for, but stopped at accounting and poor reporting.

    Does this resonate with you?

    Anyone feel like a reluctant accountant?

    Is this a common feeling among our community?

    I think it’s a very appropriate description of how some people feel and I would feel that I fit into that box. The people that understand accounting, but feel that they can offer more. I’ve always enjoyed the time between month end when you can focus on improvements and ad hoc work. Does this mean that I’m a reluctant accountant as I enjoy the time in between the core accounting period?

    Yes! I felt many ‘recovered’ from month end in between, I was just getting started. I think it’s the exposure I had to the business/client side so early in my career (in business not as an auditor). My first few jobs reflect this;

    Hotels – the guests and budget holders were part of my daily work, I worked with them, and wanted to improve what they did to improve the guest experience.

    Media – radio media sales management and reporting, I created a p&l for stations like Kiss and Capital and independent dj’s like Bruno Brookes, then paid them the net income – it felt very real!

    I then went in to banking and the month end grid…. The reluctant accountant emerged!

    The reluctant accountant would be like a rat run day in day out and falling out of love of job we do. This is like a misalignment of the …. (I let you fill in the blank)

    I tell people I’m a 120 vampire – old and lack of sleep so bear with me on the slowness and grumpiness

    Now are you smiling yet?

    Yeah, for sure – insofar as month end is an annoying inconvenience that keeps popping up and getting in the way of doing the interesting problem solving, tech implementation/automation work. I’m definitely a reluctant period closer! ????
