Develop presentation skills and present to same audience that you would present to.

Let your pears know that you are preparing your staff member for this move up

Great idea, and planning and explaining your aim to stakeholders is key.

I had a great chat with fractional CFO, Chris Ortega on how not to do this on our podcast.

    Perhaps examine the following:

    · What are the requirements of the FD role in this particular company? A key aspect here will be understanding the dynamics of the Senior Leadership Team so the manager is comfortable working in that environment when the time comes.

    · Get an understanding of the strengths and development opportunities of the manager and how these fit with the requirements above.

    · Implement a development plan to ensure the Manager acquires the skills, knowledge and confidence to fulfil the new role.

Whilst there may be some technical elements to the FD role that are new, it’s more likely that the development areas will centre around influence, relationship building, communication and collaboration. There are various ways to develop these skills, the most effective being though experiential training or coaching.

In addition, a leadership role can often be solitary, so encourage the manager to start building networks internally & externally that can provide support when required.
